This uses a fully discrete cascade complementary amplifier input stage, a configuration designed to optimize moving magnet (MM) cartridge performance.

The Rega Fono MM MK5 is in fact a prephono suitable only for MM cartridges and guaranteeing a gain of 41.4 dB, it is very good for cartridges over 3 mV, therefore suitable for driving all the main ones in circulation.

For its realization, polyester capacitors were used in the signal path and polypropylene capacitors in the RIAA equalization circuits, the latter was then divided into two phases to minimize interaction.
